It’s the spookiest time of year, which means there are many Halloween traditions and activities to experience in Chicago. Every year, the city comes alive during October with fall festivities commencing and Halloween-centered places opening like pumpkin patches and spooky-themed pop-ups. If you’re looking for something to do this Halloween in Chicago that is socially distanced and safe, look no further. Here’s a list of the best things to do in the city this Halloween.

Stroll through Lincoln Park Zoo’s Pumpkin Walk and Patch

While visiting Lincoln Park Zoo this month, you can stroll through the Pumpkin Walk, a designed pathway through the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo. Along the way, you’ll be able to see professional pumpkin carvers (on Saturdays only) and lots of carved pumpkins. After experiencing the Pumpkin Walk, head on over to the Pumpkin Patch to pick out the perfect pumpkin to carve.

Go on a haunted tour of Chicago

Take a 2-hour guided walking tour through the Chicago Loop and discover the spooky stories of gangsters and ghosts from the city’s past. You’ll be able to see the places where gangsters, such as Al Capone, used to party, make deals, and carry out threats. Additionally, you’ll be able to visit haunted locations and old crime scenes. Some of the places you’ll stop at include the Congress Hotel and Death Alley.

Watch a movie during Music Box Theater’s 31 Nights of Terror

If you’re a fan of scary movies, then this activity is perfect for you. This month, Music Box Theater is showing spooky movies at the Chi-Town Movies Drive-in every night in October. Showings include Friday the 13th, The Host, Black Christmas, The Nightmare On Elm Street, and Alien. If you don’t have a car, there are also socially distanced lawn chair seats available. Tickets are on sale now.

Drive-through a haunted house in Lincoln Park

This year is bringing us not only more drive-in theaters but also drive-through haunted houses. Located in Lincoln Park at Replay, this drive-through haunted house experience, called the Alley of Darkness, is sure to terrify and scare since it includes characters like zombies and demons. Visit Jojo’s Pumpkin Patch

Jojo’s Shake Bar, located in River North, is hosting a pumpkin patch this month, complete with a selection of pumpkins, their famous Pumpkin Pie Shake—with an actual slice of pumpkin pie on top—hot chocolates, and other classic diner menu items. The seating at Jojo’s Pumpkin Patch is first come, first served, so make sure you get there early.

Stock up on sweets at a candy store

Nothing says ‘Halloween’ like eating your favorite candy. Chicago has several fun and delicious candy stores, such as Whimsical Candy on Franklin Street or IT’SUGAR Chicago located in New City. Or, if you are more of a chocolate lover, then you can head over to the iconic Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop located in The Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue for a sweet and chocolatey treat.

Experience Outdoor “Stranger Things” Pop-Up

“Stranger Things” fans can unite over Eggo waffles and photo ops at Replay’s themed pop-up on its patio. Make sure to make a reservation to experience iconic locations from all three seasons of the show, like Scoops Ahoy, Joyce’s living room, and an 80s arcade with games.
