6 Things to do in Chicago This Spring

Spring is here, which means the sun is out and the temperatures are rising. During the springtime, Chicago comes alive with people out and about and flowers blooming. It’s one of the best times of year to come and visit and explore the city, especially because it is warmer and you can truly experience all of the city’s best outdoor features. Not sure where to start? Here’s a handy guide. Next time you’re in Chicago during the spring season put these fun attractions on your to-do list.

Explore Navy Pier

Although Navy Pier hasn’t yet announced a specific opening date, they are planning to reopen after being closed all winter this spring. Navy Pier is a fun destination in the springtime, as there are so many outdoor attractions to choose from for people of all ages. You can ride the iconic Ferris wheel, hop into a restaurant or beer garden, or even see public installations of artwork and get in touch with Chicago’s rich cultural side. Check Navy Pier’s website for updates on when they will be opening this spring.

Take an architectural tour on the Chicago River

Climb aboard a state-of-the-art cruise vessel for a 75-minute ride that explores the Chicago River’s three branches. You’ll be able to marvel at the architecture that has made the city so legendary while an expert guide shares about some of the city’s history, as well as some of the city’s most renowned landmarks, such as the Wrigley Building, theMart, and more.

Experience the sights at Millennium Park

Millennium Park is one of the most popular bucket list activities in Chicago. The park’s reflective “bean” sculpture is known for its unique shape, as well as its reflection of the city around it. The park also has other art exhibitions, sculptures, and a 3.5-acre garden. This location is perfect for photographers of all skills to take pictures, from professional to amateur. It’s one of the most iconic parks in Chicago, so make sure you plan this activity into your itinerary so that you can show your friends and family photos of this famous landmark after your trip.

Spot blooming flowers around the Loop

Generally, during the springtime, you can spot plethoras of blooming flowers at certain places in the Loop. Many of these beautiful blooming flowers are located at iconic Chicago landmarks, creating picturesque scenes for you to see and snap a photo in front of. You’ll be able to see tulips in front of the Wrigley Building in the middle of Michigan Avenue, as well as across the street from the Chicago Theatre. Make sure to take your camera on your springtime adventures around the city so that you don’t miss out on these spectacular sights.

Visit a museum or traveling exhibit

Many museums around the city have reopened to visitors recently. This spring, you can visit a variety of museums in Chicago, including the Art Institute of Chicago, where you can see an exhibit by Monet. Or, you can visit the Shedd Aquarium and see its friendly marine creatures like belugas and penguins. Other museums you can visit are the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Adler Planetarium. Check the museum of your choice’s website to see what new exhibits they offer. For example, at the Museum of Science and Industry, you can experience their new Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit, which has 300 artifacts including original comic book pages, sculptures, interactive displays, and costumes and props from Marvel’s blockbuster films. One traveling exhibit that you could visit this spring in Chicago is the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit, where you can walk through 500,000 feet of projections of Van Gogh’s artwork. Another fun traveling exhibit you can go see this spring is the FRIENDS Experience on Michigan Avenue. You’ll be able to see 12 rooms of set recreations, original props and costumes, photo ops, a retail store, and a Central Perk set. Check to see if you need to buy tickets before visiting any of these museums and traveling exhibits.

Shop in one of Chicago’s unique neighborhoods

Chicago has many unique neighborhoods with fun places to shop, including Wicker Park, West Loop, River North, Michigan Avenue, Streeterville, and more. If you like to shop ‘til you drop, then you’ll love the stores along Michigan Avenue, otherwise known as The Magnificent Mile. The Magnificent Mile boasts more than 460 retailers including popular brands, department stores, and designer labels. While you’re shopping, don’t forget to look for some of Chicago’s historic landmarks; there are over 50 located along the Magnificent Mile. If you want to shop at smaller, boutique stores, then hit up Wicker Park or West Loop for a completely different shopping experience. Wherever you go, you’ll be sure to find souvenirs to take back home with you.
