New Art and Science Exhibits in Chicago

If you’re looking to broaden your horizon and step inside Chicago’s rich arts and science scene, you’ll want to stay up-to-date on the latest exhibits and pop up shops all around town.

While you can’t go wrong with a visit to The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Science and Industry, or the Museum of Contemporary Art for their classic exhibits and artwork, it’s exciting to mark your calendars for brand new shows and demonstrations that aren’t regularly available. Check out these fun and innovative exhibits you can’t experience elsewhere.

SUE at the Field Museum

Who is SUE? SUE the T.rex, aka Specimen FMNH PR 2081 (but that doesn’t sound nearly as catchy, right?), came back to the Field Museum Dec. 21. You probably know this silly dinosaur as being a Twitter sensation, and of course, you’ll want to snag your own selfie with him, as well. (Or her, as the gender is sadly still unknown.) And if you’re visiting with kids, they’ll get a real kick out the exhibit, as well.

See the Gift Horse at The Art Institute of Chicago

Get ready to see this super famous skeleton horse in person, which was created by German artist Hans Haacke as it’s made its way to Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago. Inspired by British equine artist George Stubbs, Gift Horse represents the connection between art and finance. There is a bow around the horse’s right leg with LED lights integrated within to display market prices from the Stock Exchange. Of course it’s a masterpiece worth seeing, but the best part is, it’s the first time this work of art has touched North America.

Chicago Pop-Ups

Chicago is a great city for artistic pop-ups, whether it’s a pop-up museum like wnder or pop-up exhibits at renowned attractions throughout the city. For instance, head to The Beach at Navy Pier, which will go on between Jan. 19 and Feb. 3, to immerse yourself in those beachy vibes right in the midst of winter.

You’ll find antimicrobial and recyclable plastic balls, as well as deck chairs to recline, lifeguard chairs to really resemble that beach feel, umbrellas scattered around, and décor that perfectly emulates the ideal day at the beach. Who needs a vacation to Florida in January when you have the perks of Chicago and a “beach day” at your fingertips?

New Exhibits at the Chicago Cultural Center

Head to the Chicago Cultural Center for free admission to various visual art performances and exhibits. The themes vary, bringing in history, arts, politics, and more. Right now, you can go to African American Designers in Chicago: Art, Commerce, and the Politics of Race, as well as Art Design Chicago exhibits that are on display. Simply walk in on a whim and explore!
