5 of the Top Neighborhoods to Visit in Chicago

Chicago, the third largest city in the US, is home to over two million people and hosts over fifty million tourists on average each year. Visitors come to see the city’s famous skyline, walk along the lake, shop along the iconic Magnificent Mile, and to take in the city’s unique character, culture and history. If you’re coming to Chicago and feel overwhelmed by all the places to visit, don’t fret. We’ve compiled a list of some of the must-see neighborhoods in the city, all home to a variety of attractions, shops and restaurants to make your visit memorable.

Uptown

The North side neighborhood, a historic entertainment district, was named amongst the top 40 coolest neighborhoods in the world by TimeOut last year. Its historic entertainment venues include the Aragon and Riviera theatres, which still host shows, as well as The Green Mill, a jazz cocktail bar that infamous Chicago gangster Al Capone frequented. Uptown also boasts several unique culinary attractions. Find some of the city’s best viatnamese and chinese dishes along Argyle Street, which is nicknamed both “New Chinatown” and “Little Vietnam.”

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is known for its museums, its university campus, and its First Family: the Obamas. Run, bike or walk along the area’s 18-mile lakefront path that offers visitors a breathtaking view of the skyline, or the chance to jump in the lake to cool off on a warm summer day. Along the path, you’ll pass by the Museum of Science and Industry, which sits in a building first erected for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Follow it further south and you’ll find yourself at the University of Chicago, a stunning city campus that’s home to some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous architecture, like the Robie House.

Pilsen

The lower West side neighborhood known for its Mexican-American culture is another must-see Chicago neighborhood. Spend your day exploring The National Museum of Mexican Art, which has been described as the country’s largest Latino cultural institution. Next, enjoy some of the authentic Mexican dishes that make the neighborhood famous – it’s often called the best Mexican food in the city! As you walk around, you’ll notice the art that decorates much of the buildings in the area, another chance to take in the area’s rich culture and history. Pilsen is a great neighborhood to visit to appreciate the culture of one of the city’s most dominant ethnic communities.

Wrigleyville

If you’re looking for a lively, fun day full of beer, hot dogs and Chicago character, look no further than Wrigleyville. The area home to the Chicago Cubs is another great spot to visit to get a sense of Chicago’s personality. Visit some of the city’s most lively sports bars to get a sense of the passion Chicagoans have for their Cubs team. Catch a game at Wrigley Field or on one of the nearby rooftops that offer a baseball experience unique to Chicago. Wrigleyville also houses the famous Metro concert venue, which has hosted bands like Nirvana over the course of its forty year history.

Streeterville

Located at the heart of the city, Streeterville offers luxury shopping destinations, sightseeing, and some of the city’s best restaurants. You can shop at some of the city’s most iconic retailers along the Magnificent Mile and take in the sights of the city as you do it. Many unique and Instagrammable restaurants are located in the area, too, such as the Albert, a chic spot perfect for a Happy Hour break or to enjoy some of its signature dishes.
